If you are a fan of movies or pop culture in general, then you should have heard about or seen the infamous “Citizen Kane of bad movies” known as ‘The Room’. It is a movie so bad, that it is amazing. What I mean by this is that nothing makes sense, the acting is horrible, well everything in it is horrible, but there is something about it that makes it one of the funnest movies of all time. After a book written by Greg Sestero (best friend of Tommy Wiseau and a lead actor in ‘The Room’) that tells the story of how the movie was made and everything that happened behind the scenes, James Franco was determined to make a movie about it. Now, after years of planning, James Franco has released one of the best movies of the year and one of the best ‘True Story’ movies of the century.

‘The Disaster Artist’, starring James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Ari Graynor, Josh Hutcherson and Zac Efron, is the inspiring true story of how the worst movie of all time was made.

It follows Greg Sestero (Dave Franco), an aspiring actor who meets the mysterious and eccentric Tommy Wiseau (James Franco) after an acting class (one of the funniest opening movie scenes I’ve ever seen). They form a unique friendship and move to Los Angeles together to pursue their dreams of acting. But as they start to realise that Hollywood doesn’t want them, they decide to make a “real Hollywood movie” together called ‘The Room’. Of course, if you know about ‘The Room’, then you know how it turned out for them.

First of all, I have watched ‘The Room’ about nine times (maybe more) in my life and I always seem to laugh at the unintentional comedy in it. It is easily one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, but it’s one of the most enjoyable movies I’ve ever seen. So, my anticipation of ‘The Disaster Artist’ was quite high and after watching it and hearing nothing but great things about it, I can easily say this is one of the funniest, most inspiring and heartbreaking movies of the year.

The first huge positive I have is the acting. Everyone is amazing and there are so many well-known actors/actresses in this movie that it’s crazy.

James Franco is beyond amazing as Tommy Wiseau. He manages to look, sound and act exactly like Wiseau and he’s great to watch. I even heard in interviews with the cast that he directed the movie in character as well, so that is just great method acting. He is hilarious in the role and also makes Wiseau a strangely relatable character, which is something I didn’t expect and it was great. He also just got nominated for a Golden Globe for best actor and I wouldn’t be surprised if he got the Oscar nomination as well.

Dave Franco is also amazing as Greg Sestero. This is easily the best performance of his career and he manages to pull off both comedy and drama in a great role.

Everyone else from Seth Rogen to Alison Brie are also amazing. To put it plainly, this is one of the best acted movies this year.

The biggest positive I have for ‘The Disaster Artist’ is that it honours everything that it’s based on from the real people to ‘The Room’ itself. Wiseau is relatable and you start to pity him due to everything that happens to him. It also turns into a surprisingly inspiring movie that speaks out to anyone with a passion that they want to pursue in life. They handle it masterfully and it’s even more inspiring than most sports movies out there.

James Franco directs with passion and you can tell from the opening scene. You can see that this is something that he has wanted to make for the past couple of years and he puts the effort into it. From the framing of scenes when they are making ‘The Room’ to the behind the scenes drama, this is filmmaking with a passion and it’s great.

‘The Disaster Artist’ is also one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time. Many scenes were gut-bustingly funny and this is probably the most I’ve laughed at the cinema all year. Even though there were about eight people at the showing I went to, everyone was having a blast and you could hear the joy in their laughter.

The only real negative I had with ‘The Disaster Artist’ was that some of the characters didn’t get much screen-time/development compared to Tommy and Greg. For example, Josh Hutcherson, Jacki Weaver and Zac Efron (the scene with Zac Efron acting is one of the funniest things I’ve seen this year) don’t get to do much outside of acting in ‘The Room’ and I wish we got to see even more of these characters behind the scenes.

Overall, ‘The Disaster Artist’ is one of the best movies of the year. From the incredible performances, terrific script and great respect for the source material, ‘The Disaster Artist’ is one of the funniest yet heartbreaking movies I’ve seen all year and it also ends up being one of the most inspiring movies ever made. Also, it will make you want to watch ‘The Room’ again, which isn’t exactly a bad thing.
