Top 100 Movies of All Time

Movies are one of the greatest forms of art. They are able to take us into another world and present ideas and themes that we can enjoy and also be affected by. I have always loved movies and I didn’t realise it was going to be so hard to do a top 100.

Hey everyone, this is Andy and today I’m going to countdown my top 100 movies of all time. From the classics to modern day romps, these are my personal favourite movies of all time.

I was quite surprised by how hard it was to narrow it down to a top 100 and I had to leave out a lot of movies I adore. If you don’t see a movie on here that you thought would be on here, don’t get up me as it may have been on here originally but another came and took its place.

Also, I won’t write much on the first 50-80 as that will require a TONNE of reading.

Now, let’s begin!

100. Good Will Hunting (1997)

Robin Williams was at his finest as a troubled psychologist who helped out a gifted Matt Damon. I always seem to get a tear in my eye by the end.

99. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

The greatest cult musical of all time is responsible for my deep love of musicals. It may be strange but aren’t we all?

98. American Beauty (1999)

Even though Kevin Spacey may be one of the most hated people at this time, nothing can take away from his terrific performance in this tragically uplifting story.

97. Rec (2007)

This Spanish horror movie should be hailed as the king of the found footage genre. Seriously the last ten minutes alone is enough to chill you to your core.

96. Back to the Future Part 2 (1989)

It’s crazy to think that a sequel to one of the most enjoyable movies of all time could go into some dark places. Still makes me wish we could have the pizzas from this movie, I mean it is a few years past 2015 now.

95. Braveheart (1995)

They may take out lives, but they’ll never take away our memories of watching this medieval epic!

94. District 9 (2009)

How would have thought that a documentary style movie about a human slowly turning into an alien would be one of the most realistic alien movies of all time?

93. American Psycho (2000)

A ripped and rich Christian Bale yelling “Hey Paul” before sinking an axe into that person is all the entertainment I need.

92. The Nice Guys (2016)

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe really do make a great duo on-screen. Easily the best buddy cop movie since Lethal Weapon.

91. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

I generally love it when a movie makes the villains both likeable and relatable. Also, this has to be one of the most iconic westerns of all time.

90. 28 Days Later (2002)

Easily the most terrifying take on the zombie genre I’ve ever seen!

89. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Harrison Ford + Sean Connery + a quest for the Holy Grail = one of the most enjoyable adventure movies you’ll ever watch.

88. Die Hard (1988)

When people ask me what my favourite Christmas movie of all time is, I will answer back with this crazy action epic.

87. Schindler’s List (1993)

“What is this salty discharge coming from my eyes?” – anyone who has ever watched this Steven Spielberg masterpiece.

86. The Big Lebowski (1998)

From the opening scene that showcases just how lazy Lebowski is and how wacky and zany the other characters are, you know you are in for one of the best comedies of the 90s.

85. Jaws (1975)

Arguably one of the most iconic movies of all time, this shark based thriller is what put Steven Spielberg on the map and continues to make people afraid of the ocean.

84. The Terminator (1984)

Many people say that the sequel is the superior Terminator movie and one of the best action movies of our time. But you just can’t go past the intensity and grounded action of the original. It still holds up wonderfully today.

83. Drive (2011)

When I first watched this movie, I was disappointed as I expected a fast-paced, car-based action flick. When I revisited it a couple of years later, I discovered one of the most stylish and ultra-violent movies of all time and oh how I love it.

82. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

Sergio Leone is the king of the western genre and this epic confirmed my love of the genre. The opening 15 minutes has to be one of the greatest introductions to a character I’ve ever seen.

81. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Is this the best Marvel movie? Yes. Is it an excellent cold-war style thriller that happens to be a superhero movie? Yes. Will it ever become old and tedious? Of course not. Seriously though, this is easily the best movie Marvel has released yet!

80. Scream (1996)

I can remember the first time I watched this meta-horror movie very vividly. I was five years old (I know, very young, but if I never watched these movies as a kid I don’t think I would be the man I am today) and my brother decided to show me a horror movie. I have never been more scared by an opening sequence in my life. Love it even more today.

79. Casino Royale (2006)

The movie that forever changed the way Bond movies were made, this reimagining of the franchise managed to exceed expectations and become what might be the most realistic spy movie of all time.

78. Suspiria (1977)

“The only thing more terrifying than the last 12 minutes of this film are the first 92.” If that tagline doesn’t make you want to watch this beautifully haunting horror movie than I don’t know what else could.

77. The Incredibles (2004)

I don’t think I’ve ever meant a person who doesn’t like this Disney classic. If you don’t like this movie than I don’t think we can be friends any longer.

76. Full Metal Jacket (1987)

I will admit that the first half is far superior compared to the second half of this movie, but the second half still helps with solidifying its place as one of the greatest anti-war movies of all time.

75. Rear Window (1954)

Alfred Hitchcock’s magnum opus still holds up as one of the most intense thrillers of all time.

74. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

I’m just going to say it right now. The third Harry Potter movie is the best in the franchise. You can try and convince me otherwise but you shall not succeed.

73. Bone Tomahawk (2015)

I never knew that the western and horror genres would go together this well but that why this movie exists. It also happens to have one of the goriest death scenes ever put to film, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

72. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

I ducking love Wes Anderson’s style of filmmaking and this is the movie that made me fall in love with quirky comedies. There just isn’t any other type of movie out there. Unless you count his other movies of course (another couple may be further down on this list).

71. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

The movie that started it all happens to be one of the best space westerns of all time and it still holds up wonderfully. Well, that is if you watch the original or despecialized edition of it.

70. Before Sunset (2004)

The middle portion of the Before trilogy happens to be the best. Its subtlety, charming dialogue and chemistry between the two leads make it one of the most beautiful movies ever put on screen.

69. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)

Australian action is a genre on its own and this is easily the best addition to the Mad Max franchise. I also love how Australian it is due to them having a boomerang that can slice through anything.

68. Blade Runner (1982)

Before I say anything about this sci-fi masterpiece, I recommend watching the Final Cut of Blade Runner so you get the definite and best version of it. Other than that this is just sci-fi at its finest.

67. Stand by Me (1986)

This adaptation of the Stephen King novella is one of the most emotional coming of age tales ever put to screen. Also contains some of the best child actor performances I’ve ever seen.

66. Blue is the Warmest Colour (2013)

A three-hour French tale about a girl finding her true self may sound confronting at first, but once you give it a chance, you won’t be disappointed. Easily one of the most realistic relationships ever put to film.

65. The Raid 2 (2014)

This action epic managed to outperform its predecessor in every category. It’s violent, grounded yet over-the-top and most importantly, it’s one of the most entertaining action movies of the 21st century.

64. Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

Although some put both volumes of the Kill Bill saga together to make the whole bloody affair, I’m not going to do that. Instead, I shall talk about this excellent sequel/prequel on its own as it deserves it. It may be more dialogue heavy compared to its predecessor but it’s still just as good.

63. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

I’m just going to say that this is the best movie in the Planet of the Apes franchise due to how well made and performed it is. It’s literally a perfect sequel and the CGI looks so real that you could count every strand of hair on the apes.

62. Toy Story 3 (2010)

The perfect ending to one of the best movie trilogies of all time. The ending always makes me cry like a little kid getting their candy taken away.

61. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Arguably the best horror/comedy of the 21st century, Edgar Wright’s satire on the zombie genre is a cult favourite and one with a lot of rewatchability to it. It’s also hilarious.

60. The Dark Knight (2008)

Christopher Nolan’s epic sequel to Batman Begins is pretty much perfect. Although it may feature Heath Ledger’s last performance, it’s a performance that will be remembered for generations. Legit though, it’s the best Batman movie I’ve ever seen.

59. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Now, this is the best way to start off the greatest movie trilogy of all time!

58. Green Room (2016)

Who would have thought that one of the best locations for a thriller/horror movie would be a neo-Nazi bar run by Sir Patrick Stewart? The arm scene still gives me nightmares.

57. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

The opening 25 minutes proves that this is one of the greatest war movies of all time. Also proves that Spielberg is a master filmmaker.

56. Reservoir Dogs (1992)

The greatest heist movie happens to be a movie where we don’t even see the actual heist. It sounds crazy but Tarantino’s directorial debut is an ultra-violent masterpiece with the quintessential witty dialogue he is known for.

55. The Descent (2005)

I accidentally watched this movie for the first time about a week before I had a school excursion to a series of caves…yep I was terrified the entire time.

54. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

This is Wes Anderson and Ralph Fiennes at their best and oh how I adore this quirky movie!

53. Whiplash (2014)

As a drummer, this movie was a hard watch. I knew how much hard work goes into drumming and watching J. K. Simmons mentally abuse Miles Teller was both intense and frightening. Overall this is a modern day masterpiece.

52. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Sergio Leone is a master filmmaker and his effort here managed to be the greatest western of all time! It may be long but it’s iconic as hell and it has one of the greatest final shootouts of all time.

51. Goldeneye (1995)

It may be due to nostalgia that I personally think this is the greatest Bond movie of all time, or it may be due to my love of the N64 game adaptation of it being a staple of my childhood. Personally, though I do think this is a perfect Bond movie and it happens to be as epic as it was over 20 years ago.

50. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

If I had to sum up the epicness of the conclusion for the Lord of the Rings trilogy this is what I would say…what are you doing with your life. Go and watch it NOW! Seriously, it’s the best trilogy of all time.

49. The Thing (1982)

Horror movies based on paranoia affect me the most. The thing I like about The Thing (haha get it?) is that the monster in it has to be the most terrifying movie monster of all time. Also, the blood testing scene is one of the most intense things I’ve ever seen.

48. Se7en (1995)

Morgan Freeman + Brad Pitt + David Fincher directing = one of the most disturbing crime movies I’ve ever seen! The final scene is so tragic it’s heartbreaking.

47. Oldboy (2003)

It may be a foreign film that centres around revenge, incest and eating an octopus while it’s still alive, but it’s literally perfect. It also makes you question if the villain is the true villain or is it the protagonist?

46. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

The fact that Tarantino made a movie about a squad of American Jews who kill Nazis is simply brilliant! Christoph Waltz also happens to be one of the best supporting characters/villains of all time.

45. An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Fun fact, this was the first horror movie I ever watched. I was four at the time…

44. Zodiac (2007)

The only thing more unsettling than this movie is the fact that the Zodiac killer has never been caught. Also, this movie makes you want to become a detective/journalist.

43. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Controversial for many reasons, Stanley Kubrick’s cult classic is one of the most disturbing movies of all time. It may have also changed the way people look at Singin’ in the Rain forever.

42. 12 Angry Men (1957)

Have I ever told that I love movies which take place in one room? Well now you do and why you’re at it go and watch this classic. One of the best screenplays of all time!

41. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Yes, I do love Wes Anderson. You know what else I love? Oh wait, you already know I love quirky comedies. Well, this is Wes Anderson’s best live action movie and I will stand by that until the day he releases a live action movie which manages to be better. But that’s going to be pretty hard as this is a full-on masterpiece.

40. Battle Royale (2000)

Forget about The Hunger Games. This Japanese classic is the best Battle Royale movie of all time and it’s easily the most disturbing.

39. Jurassic Park (1993)

Da da daaaaaa daa daa, da da daaaaaa daa daa, da da dada, daaa daaa daaaaaaaaa. Okay my love for this Spielberg classic be a little eccentric, but who didn’t have a childhood where Jurassic Park was a staple of it? I adore this movie and if anyone thinks that Jurassic World is better, well our friendship will never be the same again.

38. Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003)

Although Vol. 2 is brilliant, you just can’t beat the craziness and ultra-violence of Vol. 1. The Bride’s first step in her revenge is one filled with buckets of blood, plenty of great sword fights and some of the best Tarantino dialogue/humour around. It’s an essential action movie for everyone!

37. Back to the Future (1985)

Yet another Spielberg classic to appear on this list, Back to the Future is iconic for many reasons. From the witty characters, amazing script and iconic score, this is an 80s classic that everyone loves for a reason.

36. Blue Velvet (1986)

Although David Lynch is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, not enough people know about him. If you want to see if you can handle his style of filmmaking then this idiosyncratic 80s crime thriller is what you’re looking for. Dennis Hopper is terrifying!

35. The Blues Brothers (1980)

I don’t even care if people hate me for this choice but I adore the Blues Brothers! It was the first musical that I truly enjoyed as a kid and I still love it today. It ever fails to entertain and if I need a movie to make me happy, I’ll chuck on this classic!

34. Almost Famous (2000)

Another fun fact, I was once in a band named after this movie. Cameron Crowe’s almost biopic is a love letter to the music and lifestyle of the 70s. Full of eccentric yet relatable characters, an amazing soundtrack and a career-best performance from Kate Hudson, Almost Famous is an excellent three-hour movie that will stay with you for years after you watch it.

33. Taxi Driver (1976)

“You talkin’ to me?” This is one of the most iconic movie quotes of all time and there are people who still don’t know what it’s actually from. This Scorsese crime flick is a true classic of cinema and it also has Robert De Niro at his peak.

32. Fantastic Mr Fox (2009)

Well, I did say The Royal Tenenbaums was Wes Anderson’s best live action movie, not his best overall. I only watched this movie for the first time about two months ago and I knew it was one of my favourites from that moment. It’s way too clever to pass on.

31. Misery (1990)

I’m going to say three things about this movie to convince you to watch it. It’s adapted from the Stephen King classic. Kathy Bates gives what is arguably her best performance as the psychotic (yet bipolar) Annie Wilkes. And lastly, the hobbling scene is known as one of the most disturbing scenes of all time for a reason.

30. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Spielberg really knows how to make adventure movies and he created one of the most iconic movie characters with the first entry in the Indiana Jones trilogy (I refuse to give in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull). It’s as iconic as it is amazing and you just can’t beat the fun nature of it.

29. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

If this John Hughes classic isn’t the definition of the 80s, then I don’t know what else is. Matthew Broderick became forever known for his charming and energetic performance as the titular character and there are plenty of reasons for that. Mainly though because this is such a fun movie and one that I can easily watch several times a year and never get bored of it.

28. Hot Fuzz (2007)

Edgar Wright’s best entry in the Cornetto trilogy also happens to be his best movie yet! It’s a perfect parody of buddy cop movies and it is a damn good action/comedy. From the incredible performances, unpredictable plot and excellent action sequences, this is a movie that deserves the praise.

27. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

The sequel that forever changed how we view Star Wars will be forever associated with one of the greatest plot twists of all time! It made me love both Star Wars and the sci-fi genre in general and for that, I will always adore this excellent sci-fi epic. It also helped make Darth Vader one of the greatest movie villains of all time.

26. In Bruges (2008)

First impressions of this dark comedy can be drastically different from what this movie really is. Going into it for the first time, I was expecting a crime/comedy about two hit men trying to fit in with the lifestyle of a town they both love and hate. What it actually is though is a surprisingly effective look into what grief can do to a person and how dark comedy helps out dramatically. It’s an amazing dark comedy but it also goes to some really dark places.

25. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

I still can’t believe people haven’t seen The Lord of the Rings trilogy! It’s literally the greatest movie trilogy of all time and people say they don’t want to watch it because they watched The Hobbit trilogy and didn’t like it. There is a reason people love this trilogy and it’s because it is a trilogy that covers so much ground. The middle portion of the trilogy is my personal favourite. From the epicness that is the battle of Helm’s Deep to the introduction of the infamous Gollum, the Two Towers is the best part of the amazing trilogy. Need I say more?

24. Aliens (1986)

“Get away from her, you Bitch!” yet another one of the most well-known movie quotes of all time, but I do feel like more people may know what it’s actually from. James Cameron’s follow-up to the Ridley Scott classic is a perfect sequel. It decided to move from the straight horror genre to an action/horror genre and it was for the better. It’s one of the best action movies of the 80s and also one of the best sci-fi movies of all time.

23. City of God (2002)

One of the only “based on a true story” movies to appear on this list, City of God is easily the best foreign movie I’ve ever watched! The fast-paced telling of a really disturbing true story turned into one of the most enjoyable crime movies of all time. From the incredible performances, amazing cinematography and attention to detail, City of God is a perfect crime drama which transports the viewer into the seedy world of Rio de Janerio.

22. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

My second favourite adaptation of a Stephen King novella is my favourite prison movie of all time. The emotional story of an innocent man going to jail for two life sentences is one of the most inspiring tales ever put to screen. With Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman at their very best and incredible direction from Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption is the ultimate prison movie and if you don’t like it, are you even human?

21. The Goonies (1985)

When I tell people that The Goonies is one of my favourite movies of all time, they don’t believe me. They tell me that it’s a really average 80s adventure movie and isn’t as great as I remember it. Well to those out there who have told me this I’m here to prove to you why this is one of the greatest movies of all time. First of all, the cast made up almost entirely of young adults is amazing! Every actor/actress is amazing and a lot have gone onto other amazing movies. The plot may be slightly ridiculous but who doesn’t love a great adventure movie? The soundtrack is to die for and the overall movie itself stands up wonderfully by today’s standards. I can watch it several times a year for the rest of my life and never get sick of it. THAT’S how much I love The Goonies!

20. Toy Story 2 (1999)

There is this common theme in this list where the middle portion of a trilogy happens to be the best. In this case, Toy Story 2 is easily the best in the amazing trilogy (the original didn’t make the list sorry) and many will agree with me on that. It introduced us to Jessie, Bullseye, Stinky Pete the Prospector and of course Al from Al’s Toy Barn (a person which I may or may not have some similarities to). Zurg also had a major part in it and it was basically a prison escape movie. There are so many things I love about this sequel but I can only talk about a few. Toy Story 2 IS the best of the trilogy and it is definitely the greatest Pixar movie of all time!

19. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Who loves four-hour epics? This guy right here! Where do I even start with the epic of epics? I could talk about how Peter O’Toole (and his ridiculously bright blue eyes) gives one of the best performances of the 20th century. Or I could talk about the mesmerizing score composed by Maurice Jarre. I could even talk about its influence on modern cinema and even how it’s an excellent example of how extras can make the scope of a movie even grander. I could go on for hours but David Lean’s epic masterpiece is one that every movie lover should watch and if you are turned off by the almost four-hour run-time, I’ll tell you a little secret. It feels like it goes for two-hours, not four. That’s how amazing it is.

18. The Departed (2006)

Martin Scorsese + Jack Nicholson + Matt Damon + Leonardo DiCaprio + Marky Mark = an epic crime drama which also happens to be an amazing remake. The Departed really took me by surprise when I first watched it. It was the first Scorsese movie I had ever watched and I never expected to be swept away into the crime world of Boston like I was. I was hooked within minutes and it held my attention closely for its 151-minute run-time. It’s one of Scorsese’s best movies and it never gets old.

17. Children of Men (2006)

When I put this as my number one sci-fi movie of all time on my Top 10 Sci-fi Movies list last year, some of my dormies wanted to watch it and see why I love it as much as I do. After its brutally tense and emotional two hour run-time, they understood why. They have swept away into a realistic and depressing future which could easily happen to us. Children of Men isn’t your average sci-fi movie. There aren’t any space cowboys or spaceships or anything like that. This is a grounded sci-fi movie which focuses on human nature itself and how it can be both depressing and beautiful at the same time. Although it may now be my second favourite sci-fi movie of all time (my number one is coming up very soon), Children of Men deserves more attention not just for its realism, but for its message about humanity itself.

16. Apocalypse Now (1979)

Okay, I do have a soft spot for movies about the Vietnam War. What I also have a soft spot for is a clever adaptation of a great book. Apocalypse Now ticks all of those boxes and then some. This is a haunting and terrifying look at the darkness of humanity and how easy it is to become something you fear. This brilliant adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is one of the most brilliant movies ever conceived. From the hellish production behind it, it’s amazing that it became the classic it’s known as today. Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece is a staple of cinema and it rightfully deserves its place on this list.

15. Trainspotting (1996)

When people ask me if Trainspotting is about trains, I look at them, shake my head and say “oh you sweet summer child.” Although there may be one train in it, this is a movie about heroin addicts. Oh yes, I did say that. It’s about heroin addicts and it’s surprisingly one of the most energetic movies I’ve ever seen! First of all Ewan McGregor is charming as our protagonist who we follow as he goes from an addict, to normal, to an addict, to normal again. It’s absolutely bonkers but it’s a masterpiece. Danny Boyle’s stylish film-making made it what it is and I couldn’t imagine it any other way. That is the reason why it is my favourite Scottish movie of all time. The sequel is also amazing.

14. Once Upon a Time in America (1984)

Sergio Leone’s last film transitioned from the wild west and into Prohibition-era New York. Spanning over a fifty year period, this four-hour epic requires a lot of patience and attention to fully appreciate Leone’s swansong. From the amazing performances by Robert De Niro and James Woods (who I must say gives the best performance of his career), the wonderful score which may seem strange at first for a crime movie but works in well with the whole fairy-tale like aspect of it, and of course Leone’s beautiful direction for one of the most complex and beautiful movies of all time. Once Upon a Time in America may be overshadowed by other crime movies but that doesn’t take away from how epic and grand this masterpiece really is.

13. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Never have I ever been so nervous for a sequel like I was for Blade Runner 2049. In the lead up to its release, I was praying for it to be good. It had Denis Villeneuve in the director’s chair, Ryan Gosling in the lead role, the great Roger Deakins was the cinematographer and Harrison Ford was coming back to reprise his role from the original. I’m pretty sure I silently cried about five times during my first viewing of this movie. It quickly became my favourite sci-fi movie of all time and I couldn’t believe it had surpassed the already amazing original. For those of you who have not seen it, Blade Runner 2049 is a modern-day masterpiece and it deserves more praise and attention. It’s one of the only perfect movies out there.

12. No Country for Old Men (2007)

The Coen Brothers make amazing movies. It’s a shame that I couldn’t include many of their movies on this list but if I had to choose just one of their movies then it would definitely be this masterful cat and mouse thriller. From the opening scene, we know that we are about to see the most terrifying movie villain of all time (portrayed wonderfully by Javier Bardem). To sum up, just how amazing and intense this movie is wouldn’t do it justice. This is may well be the greatest thriller of all time and it is easily the most intense movie I’ve ever seen. The coin toss scene at the gas station has to be one of my top five movie scenes of all time!

11. The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989)

If I had to choose a movie that took me by surprise the most, it would have to be this strangely beautiful, yet harrowing play-like movie. I don’t even know where to begin as I knew nothing about this movie going in and I think that was the reason I loved it so much upon first viewing. I was captivated by what was happening on-screen. It may be heavy on dialogue and full frontal nudity, but that’s what makes it the cult classic it is known as today. I know that a majority of you reading this may have never heard about this movie and that is a shame because this deserves more attention compared to movies like Fifty Shades of Grey. I think the best way to get you to watch it is that Dumbledore plays a foul-mouthed, horrible human being and it’s amazing.

10. Starship Troopers (1997)

I know what you’re thinking. How the hell is Starship Troopers in your top ten movies of all time? Just hear me out for a second. I grew up with this movie on VHS with my older brother and myself watching it almost every week. We were obsessed with it and considering how young I was when I first watched it, it was strange that I loved it that much. Now when I watch it, I find it even more enjoyable and clever as now I can see how great of a satire it is and not just an over-the-top action movie which happens to be one of the goriest and craziest movies of the 90s. Paul Verhoeven may be more recognised for Robocop and Total Recall (both are amazing movies), but I personally believe that Starship Troopers is his masterpiece and although it may be a little over-the-top for many of you, I still love it for what it is and there is nothing that can take away my love for this movie! This may be my guilty pleasure but oh how great it is!

9. The Shining (1980)

Is Stanley Kubrick one of the greatest directors of all time? Yes. Is The Shining his best movie? Personally, I think yes! The Shining isn’t just any normal horror movie. It’s a horror movie which looks into what isolation can do to a family and how it can drive a man insane. Loosely adapted from the Stephen King classic, this masterpiece is one of the scariest horror movies of all time for a reason. It doesn’t rely on monsters or jump scares. Instead, it focuses on humanity and the slowly degrading mind of a seemingly innocent man. Jack Nicholson is terrifying as Jack Torrence and because of this, he is one of the biggest icons in horror history. This truly is a horror masterpiece.

8. There Will Be Blood (2007)

Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day Lewis make for one of the greatest director/actor pairs of all time. Their work in There Will Be Blood may well be the prime example of this partnership. Opening with a 15-20 minute scene with no dialogue, just music, this isn’t a normal Hollywood movie. This is an old fashion epic and one that sticks with you long after the credits roll. Daniel Day Lewis as Daniel Plainview may well be the greatest performance by an actor I’ve ever seen! He is fascinating to watch as you see him continually betray people to fulfil his lust for greed. It’s a marvellous character study and one of the greatest movies of all time! The final scene may also be the greatest closing scene to any movie I’ve ever seen.

7. Dazed and Confused (1993)

I have a soft spot for coming-of-age movies, and I also have a soft spot for Richard Linklater movies. Dazed and Confused is Richard Linklater’s masterful coming-of-age tale which happens to be one of the most realistic movies of all time. Revolving around the adventures of teenagers on their final day of school in 1976, this coming-of-age tale is one of the most enjoyable movies I’ve ever seen. From Matthew McConaughey’s hilarious performance as a man who wants to stay in the past, to Jason London’s Floyd who wants to start fresh and move on with his pointless life, this is a realistic movie. It does get pretty deep and philosophical at times, but that’s why I love it. It isn’t afraid to show the realism of what it’s like to party with your childhood friends for what may be the last time and for that I respect it.

6. The Godfather Part 1 (1972)

I can already hear people yelling at me right now as they say, “How dare you put The Godfather Part 1 at number 6 and why isn’t it above part 2?” First of all, The Godfather Part 1 is one of the greatest movies of all time and it really is the masterpiece that everyone knows it as. Just because it’s at number 6 doesn’t mean it’s bad. I still adore Part 1 as much as much I adored it when I first watched it in 2012. It still holds a special place in my heart as when I found a copy of it, I watched it two times in one day. I was gobsmacked by what I had just watched and couldn’t believe that it lived up to the crazy expectations around it. The Godfather Part 1 is a brilliant mafia movie and one of the greatest movies of all time. Marlon Brando’s performance alone is enough to make this movie amazing.

5. Pulp Fiction (1994)

Oh Quentin Tarantino, how I love your movies! Pulp Fiction isn’t just one of the best movies from the 90s, it’s also Quentin Tarantino’s magnum opus. What seems like such a seemingly simple movie, happens to be both complex and brilliant due to Tarantino’s writing and his direction. I could talk about how Samuel L. Jackson gives the best performance in the movie thanks to the epic monologue he gives before he kills someone. Or even how the dance scene between John Travolta and Uma Thurman is one of the greatest uses of music of all time. Even how the storyline centred around Bruce Willis goes from fun to disturbing in minutes. Pulp Fiction is like a series of short stories and the way Tarantino connects them ends up being one of the greatest movies of all time!

4. Alien (1979)

“In Space, no one can hear you scream.” If that isn’t the most iconic tagline for a movie then I don’t know what is. Ridley Scott’s terrifying masterpiece deserves all of the attention it has received since it’s release almost 40 years ago. Alien is a masterwork of combining three genres into one. It’s a sci-fi/thriller/horror movie and it works amazingly well because of that. From not knowing who will survive once the Alien gets on board, to all of the amazing character development thrown in, Alien is iconic for a reason and if you still haven’t seen it, what are you even doing with your life? One thing I also have to say is when I recommend this movie to people, sometimes they will say, “Oh Alien, is it a spin-off of Alien Vs. Predator?” You can just imagine my reaction to that.

3. Boogie Nights (1997)

Yet another Paul Thomas Anderson entry in the top 10, Boogie Nights is a masterpiece that has turned off a lot of people due to its subject matter. Many of my friends don’t want to watch it because it centres around the porn industry in the late 70s and early 80s. The truth is that there are only about two sex scenes if that. It doesn’t centre on sex. Instead, Anderson decided to centre on the people themselves and how the porn industry can both make someone’s life great and how it can absolutely destroy someone’s life. Boogie Nights also contains the greatest tonal shift in any movie I’ve ever seen. I can’t spoil it but how it transitions from the fun times of the 70s, and into the darkness of the 80s is brilliant.

2. The Godfather Part 2 (1974)

Of course The Godfather Part 2 had to make the number two spot. Not only is it the greatest sequel/prequel of all time, but it also happens to be Francis Ford Coppola’s greatest movie of all time. I can go on forever talking about how amazing Al Pacino is and how his character arc may be the greatest character arc in all of cinema. As well as how the three-and-a-half hour runtime is perfect for this epic. But I’m not to say much about it because you’ve already heard about its impact on cinema and how it truly is a masterpiece. You’ve heard it all before so that only means one thing. You should go and watch both part 1 and 2. You don’t have to worry about part 3, it’s pretty disappointing.

1. Goodfellas (1990)

Some of you may have seen this coming but yes, Martin Scorsese and his greatest attempt at a true story is the greatest movie of all time! Goodfellas is more than perfect. It’s more than a mafia movie and it’s more than just a retelling of a true story. It’s the definition of what a movie should be and how as an art form, movies can be one of the most entertaining forms of art. Goodfellas may be anchored by amazing performances from Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and of course, the amazing Joe Pesci, but they compliment the movie. Martin Scorsese’s stylish filmmaking mixed in with the terrific soundtrack and brilliant writing help make this a true masterpiece in all of cinema. Goodfellas isn’t just the best crime movie of all time, it’s also the greatest movie of all time, and I will stand by that statement until the day I die.
